Key components include

 

Antenna systems: Antennas help receive and transmit radio waves from within the tower’s coverage area. There are many antenna types. The two most common are panel antennas, which are flat, rectangular and versatile, and dish antennas, which are large, circular and used for point-to-point communication.


Transceivers: After antennas receive radio waves, a transceiver converts the waves into electrical signals. It also converts electrical signals into radio waves to be transmitted by antennas.


Coaxial cables: These specialized cables connect antennas to transceivers, enabling them to communicate. They possess low signal-loss properties, allowing for efficient data transmission with minimal interference.


Tower structure: The tower, or mast, is usually constructed of steel or concrete for stability. The taller a tower and its antennas, the better their line of sight and the broader the area they can cover.


Equipment shelters: Cell towers have specially designed enclosed shelters to house base station equipment, such as transceivers, climate control systems and security features. They keep equipment running smoothly by protecting it from the elements and other outside forces.

Four Types of Communication Towers
 

Guyed Tower

A guyed tower is a light- to heavy-weight communication tower constructed with straight rods aligned in a triangular form, supported by wires at all angles.

Guyed towers are especially tall—reaching heights of up to 2,000 feet—and are typically used to hold antennas high off the ground, allowing for greater signal strength and cell reception.

In addition to cellular use, they also serve radio and television broadcasting purposes. These towers are ideal for rural areas where maximum height is needed at an economical cost.

 

Monopole Towers

This type of cell tower consists of a single tubular mast. Due to the instability associated with a single pole, the height of these structures generally does not exceed 200 feet.

An advantage of this tower type is that it requires minimal ground space, and the antenna needs only to be mounted on the exterior at the top of the mast.

 

Lattice Towers

Also referred to as “self-supporting towers,” lattice towers are typically made from steel and constructed in a triangular or square shape. These towers generally offer the most stability and flexibility compared to other types of cellular towers.

 

Stealth Towers

Stealth towers are often deployed to comply with zoning regulations. Because they require additional materials to create a concealed appearance, they are more expensive than other tower types. Their smaller size also makes them generally less efficient.
